Morning On Mars
Martian sunrises, as seen by the HiRISE orbiter
These images are 3D renders created by the amazingly talented and dedicated artist Kees Veenenbos. They were created from data generated by MOLA, the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter, which has given us an extremely detailed picture of what the surface of mars looks like.
He inputs the data into Terragen and then, using what we know of Mars’ atmosphere and it’s distance from the sun, creates these beautiful images. They are not, however, actual photographs taken by HiRISE. To see those, go here, they’re gorgeous as well, though taken with more thought to scientific use.
